RE: Places to buy Wire/Wick/Mesh, and wire technical info
******Resistance Wire Technical Info******

This stuff all looks complicated, so to cut to the chase, for the vast majority of rebuildable users I would suggest Kanthal in 0.20mm (32AWG) for low resistance coils, or around 0.16mm (34AWG) for medium resistance coils. Nichrome is also fine on silica wicks, but some issues have been reported with Genesis style atomisers.

For the more technically inclined..

AWG (American Wire Gauge) to Metric conversion

30 - 0.255mm
31 - 0.227mm
32 - 0.202mm
33 - 0.18mm
34 - 0.16mm
35 - 0.143mm
36 - 0.127mm
37 - 0.113mm

İmage

What is the difference between Nichrome and Kanthal?

They are both alloy wires that do the same job - they get hot when an electrical current runs through them. The difference is what metals make up the alloys - primarily nickel and chromium in nichrome, and iron, chromium and aluminium in Kanthal.

Kanthal is slightly 'springier' off the reel, and it can be heated briefly in a flame (annealed) to make it easier to work with. It also sticks to a magnet and nichrome does not. For atomisers that use silica wick, there is not much difference, any of the above alloys will do IMO. For Genesis (stainless steel wick) style atty's Kanthal is recommended as it has been reported that nichrome tends to stretch slightly with use, which is a problem with Genesis type wicks.

Has anyone ever used ss wire for coils , I would of thought this to be a better option for taste.

There's a post about this here: http://ukvapers.org/Thread-Did-Coil-Stainless-steel

I'm going to have to put my skeptic's hat on and ask why would a stainless steel coil taste any better than a kanthal or nichrome coil? Once the coil is oxidised (an oxide layer builds up on the surface once it's been thoroughly heated) I've not noticed any odd tastes from either of them.

Stainless steel is generally an alloy of iron, chromium, nickel and various other elements in smaller amounts depending on the alloy.

Nichrome is mainly nickel and chromium (some grades contain iron)

Kanthal is mainly iron, aluminium and chromium.

For info on what's in metals Matweb is a good source of information.

RE: Places to buy Wire/Wick/Mesh, and wire technical info
Really useful stuff there Papa, thanks for posting. I found this vendor recently who do Nichrome, Kanthal and mesh at reasonable prices. I've only had some of their Nichrome and that was fine:

Shipping to UK was €4
