Just wanted to share my new possession. So far, Im liking it a LOT. Very solid and on the weighty side ,but even with my hand problems it seems shes a keeper.I got the polished finish, which actually is a soft smooth brushed finish. It is amazing in design and features.

I think there are only about 20 left for sale, but as these are shipping more and more people are wanting it. It will be awhile until they produce more and the introductory price will be higher and the extra top caps and accessories will not be included.

Its very easy to adjust your atomizers so they are flush. There is a special top cap for using cartomizers or traditional cartridge type atomizers.

I consider myself an informed layman when it comes to AVPs and this is my first truly AVP. I had to adjust my Kick to lower wattage because its hitting harder and than my Saber Touch.

Froms all the testing it seems to have excellent conductivity because of the Rhodium Plating and the Gold. Rhodium is harder than gold, silver, brass and will not wear off unless abused. They come with a lifetime warranty.

Im happy, this is ELA in full 18650 mode with the Kick and kick extension tube.

This started out as a quick "how I've got best results" type post and has then evolved over the last hour into a guide for noobs/random ponderings of a bloke who waffles too much. Many members here will likely know better - please chip in if you do

So, as the observant among you will know I was very lucky recently (thanks again Coop) and bagged myself a nice little setup. Many of you shinyitis sufferers will have moved on from such things, but I have to say that comparing my lovely UDT and RSST to my former devices, even Novas, really is like comparing a Porsche to, well let's say something that's not a Porsche

Considering this is a device that lots of noobs who want to take the plunge into mods n rebuildables will be looking at because of affordability I thought I'd share some observations and experiences for the benefit of the aforementioned.

This really is old rope for a lot of you, but I know that noobs (being one myself) might not want to ask the simplest questions on forums for fear of being ridiculed or just ignored (an irrational fear, it turns out in my experience) so I thought I'd cram as much useful info in here as I could.

Some caveats & assumptions before I start:

I'm a tinkerer and therefore am not in anyway afraid of getting stuck in with drills, saws, Dremel-a-likes etc. But I research first if I have anything less than a basic understanding of what I'm doing.
This ensures I know the risks, ie at worst I might end up binning the thing I'm working on because I've fooked it. At best I might have to invoke plan B. This is a good rule in life.

In other words don't do it blind or you've wasted money.

All vaping with this so far has been with Perfumers Apprentice (TPA from now on) RY4 Double or Black Cherry, DIY mixed to 70/30 pg/vg at 18mg Nic strength. If this raises any questions for you, look in the mixology board here, It's where I lurked the most before joining and posting and it's full of useful stuff.
There are tons of concentrate brands available, TPA works for me, although I suspect at least some of the Capella & Inawera stuff I have on the way will supersede this.
That's a whole other thread though so I'll leave it there.

I like clouds of vapour and a fair amount of throat hit.

There's no photos of anything I talk about yet - this was a spur of the moment thing and I've none prepared, but the next couple of tinkering sessions will be photographed and I'll post them if it'll help anyone.

So, on we go.

Wick. As you (if you're a noob) will possibly know, genesis type rebuildable atomizers use a wick made of stainless steel mesh to transport the juice to the coil where it is then vaporised. There are a million and one vids and threads out there that demonstrate beautifully how to do this with a million or so methods so I'll not harp on - go read and watch and be prepared for some tinkering to get it right for you.
In brief it needs rolling into a straw type affair and oxidising which requires some sort of heat source. The diameter of the wick is determined to at least some degree by the hole it's going into. In the case of the RSST it's a mahoosive hole (ooh-er) at 3mm.
So what worked for me? I tried a 3mm diameter wick and it just didn't seem to wick well, some kind of epic gravity/capilary action conflict happening. Just shy of 2mm (ish) seems to give me the best flow with a pin diameter opening down the middle - achieved by, well - ramming a pin down there!!
Roll it around the pin loosely and then roll constantly in one direction until it's even and the desired diameter. Then shove it in the wick hole and wrap my coils. too small, roll it the other way to expand.

Coils and wire
Ain't that a minefield? There's Kanthal, nichrome, round, ribbon, 27 different guages, rope and so on.
I've got some ribbon type wire of unknown origin or guage kindly supplied by the aforementioned Coops , a ton of 0.2 Kanthal I got for rewicking my nova.
It turned up coiled with about 6 wraps of ribbon and it was a lovely piece of work, not a single hotspot, all coils glowing evenly. But it spat a lot when firing. No harm in that but it freaked me out when the things actually in my mouth vaping.
According to a few folks here, it happens with ribbon in these things. I tried mucking about with number of wraps and distance, I tried the round wire wrapped 3-6 times and no joy. This meant either too much juice flowing to the coil which isn't too much of a problem for a while but eventually you'll get gurgles/whistles and leaks. Or not enough juice for the heat produced to vapourise leading to dry hotspots and absolutely the yuckest taste in the universe ever.
I also suffered with hot legs. the tail of the coil that travels to the terminal glowing red.
What worked for me?
Todds (that's where i saw it anyhoo) twisted round wire, go look up how to do it it's easy either with a power tool in 2 seconds or by hand in about a minute.
Oh my goodness it's awesome, 0.2 kanthal, twisted to form a simple braid and flamed to take out the tension. 3-4 wraps around the wick and not too tight either as it'll strangle the juice flow. Too loose and I get hotspots though. So the Petar K method (prewrapping around a drill bit or somesuch, then placing the coil and inserting the wick) doesn't work for me, too fiddly and I just can't seem to get it right first time.

I find the method I do use very easy. Just drop the wick in the hole, pin still inserted (little bobble end on the pin to hold on to.) Undo the negative terminal screw a turn and loop one end of your wire underneath it, then tighten it. then start wrapping, go around the outside of the wick first so clockwise wraps from the bottom (I think ) turning the device, not twisting the wire works best for me and you can easily get it in between wick and positive post, keep going for a few wraps and when you're done it's time for the positive connection. I love the spring and washer in the RSST you just kind of hook it over the little flange formed by the wider washer, pull down and slide it in (so to speak) release and away you go, it's grabbed.
Now regarding the hot legs, which I got regardless of wire and method of wrapping, many have said it's to do with uneven leg length at either terminal. Easy fix for this is to give the leg a little push kind of 'inwards' which increases the amount of leg which is coil and decreases the amount of leg which is leg, thus evening things up. I will try to post pictures but that's the best way I can describe it!!
I've found the twisted wire is also quite forgiving with regards to the evenness of your wraps but because i like it tidy I've still made sure they look ok.

So in summary on coils
Twisted 0.2 Kanthal, 3-4 wraps, wrapped on the device, around the wick. Hotspots really do muck up the flavour and make it taste awful but the biggest hotspot problem for me was legs - easily fixed.

Airflow Simple - as it arrived, about 1mm airhole in cap and I really did find it a hard draw.
what worked for me?
I like it a little airier than most I think, but a dremel-a-like on slow with a 1.5mm bit and it's now just right. I tried closing it up to about 1.25 or thereabouts using a band cut from a 10ml juice bottle inserted in the cap, with the 'new' smaller hole in but that was too tight as well. The point though, if you get it and it's too tight or too loose for your tastes - easily solved.

overall summary

increased airhole diameter to 1.5
400 SS mesh wick at about 2mm with pinhole opening down the middle
3 or 4 wraps of twisted 0.2 Kanthal wire, really easy to wrap and no hotspots.
Love the adjustable centre pin/positive terminal - I was able to easily eliminate a gap, I don't know much but I know I don't like gaps.
Vapes like a bleedin train
nice flavour
Don't think I'll ever need anything else.
edit.. now the wife's not looking I will probably need/want something else.
But not because this is crap - it really is bloody amazing, more because of shinyness, engineeredness, flushness, multipurposeness elliot ness & loch ness

Other observations

There's a little bung which serves as a stopper in the filler hole and some guys on here say they take it out to aid wicking, I found no discernible difference.

I found that with a little perseverance you can get this thing wicking and producing tons of vapour in the 90 degrees upright position. This also means that when tilted to horizontal or beyond, it's a monster and you might end up with more juice flowing than you can vapourise. It'll tolerate this for a fair while but eventually you'll need to lift the lid and mop up with some tissue, nothing complicated. Find the vapour production/inconvenience balance that best suits you!!!

Flavour production is really good, compared to what I had before anyway. If there's anything better, it must surely be manna from heaven. BUT the flavour does seem to suffer after prolonged vaping, a quick dry burn between fills till the coil glows seems to solve this. What this does to the life expectancy of the coil/wick I don't know, but seeing as how a wick with no flavour is going to get replaced while unresolved. It seems like a no brainer

As for funk on the coils - I've not put any 'nasty' juices through it yet, and possibly won't - I've got a dripper on the way, but I'd imagine a rince and dry burn will sort that for a while at least.

Changing flavours is really easy, just burn off the old flavour and fill with the new, if it was a strong one, take the wick out and torch it for a moment, then recoil.

This really is a great introduction to the world of rebuildables, it's cheap enough to kill without too much of a financial hit, but actually quite hard to kill if you do your research.

This really has gone in a different direction than I expected and I've tons to add but I think I'll do that in a new post tomorrow. I'll also put in my twopenneth about the UDT and mods/batteries in general.

Finally, if you're a noob, don't be put off by the expensive stuff and think "this is no good for me" If Ego types aren't doing it for you and you want something more, you don't have to spend ££££s to achieve it.

I know there is a difference in experience/quality etc between low end mods and high end mods, but don't be mistaken about the jump from Ego types and cigalikes to the low end mods, it really can be worth it. Vapour production, flavour, maintainability (new word - call the OED) all make it worthwhile.

Hope this is useful to somebods, more to follow

JF

Oh and here's a photie that kind of shows what I'm on about to fix the hot leg, look at the kinked wire between the wick and the neg terminal (bottom screw) - rubbish photo but I'll do another one in daylight. And it's a bit of a mess as I've been vaping heavily for an hour - needs a wipe!!!!

I have about 20 or so mods. 5 really good ones and the rest mainstream ones.
