Buying Pure Nicotine
This post is repeated from ukvapers.com but applies to here too

We (the admin team) find ourselves with a bit of a problem. Much as we dislike bans, rules and other such tedious nuisance, there has recently been a rather alarming insanely dangerous development in the ecig world. A company (with a past history of legally and morally questionable products) has started selling 98% pure nicotine, in bottles up to 200ml. Now I know in the past that we've pointed out the illegality of buying high strength solutions (Under the Poisons Act), but this goes far beyond that.

Quote:Adults
The mean lethal dose has been estimated to be 30 to 60 mg (0.5-1.0 mg/kg) (Gosselin, 1988)

A single ml of 98% nicotine has 980mg of nicotine, making it many times a lethal dose, even by skin absorption, so potentially a few drops on the skin could be fatal. It may even be possible to OD by inhalation of the fumes from an open bottle. The website doesn't even give any significant warning about how dangerous this stuff is, nor how to handle it safely. Clearly, this is not something that anyone should have in their home as dangerous amounts may easily be transferred by contact, such as the outside of the pipette used to transfer it.

If ever there was a vaping product that was likely to result in accidental deaths, this is it, in fact given the toxicity of pure nicotine, it almost guarantees it. None of us have any desire to assist someone buying a product that is this dangerous.

We therefore feel that this company should not in anyway be promoted, supported or even given PR by mention. It's name and URL are now automatically filtered to remove them from posts. Any that are missed will be tidied up by hand. If other retailers come to our attention with similar products, the same policy will be applied.

Do not buy pure nicotine, and do not link to places where it is sold.

I don't really understand how are they allowed to sell such products to the public Confused and why some folks are risking their life for saving few quids. When I hear about anything above 36mg/ml my whole body starts to shake Sad

RE: Buying Pure Nicotine
"A single ml of 98% nicotine has 980mg of nicotine" - holy smokes, I got my calculation wrong and thought it was 98mg but of course that would be 9.8% If 20 drops is roughly 1ml then 1 drop is like 49mg, potentially enough to kill you... it wouldn't be wise to purchase pure nicotine.

Now that is serious. No way that should be available.

It also pays not to be scared of it without reason. I make all my home mixes with a 100mg/ml base (10%) and that's no big deal.

It would be if you were in the UK - strengths over 74mg/ml are illegal without a poisons license

RE: Buying Pure Nicotine
I believe if you are very careful about what you are doing that shouldn't be any problem. However, the risk factor grows with higher nic content. Sometimes I get confused and may use higher percentage. So if my base has lower nic content, the small error may not be lethal (may end up with 26mg instead of 24 mg). The higher the nic content of the base, the larger the error interval will be. You may end up with 36mg instead of 24mg. But that's only me and as I said if you are very precise about exactly what you do, I don't expect any issues of working with high dose base.

RE: Buying Pure Nicotine
And the lesson to be learnt is.....

Whatever concentration of nicotine you are using, be careful and if you are not sure what you are doing, please don't do it! Nicotine even in lesser concentrations is a poison and potentially very dangerous.

Use of pure nicotine in a non-laboratory environment without extractors and safety wear, would appear to be incredibly stupid. But that said I am sure someone at some point will be incredibly stupid, hopefully without inflicting damage on others. At least UKV with it's clear position on this, will not in any way be seen to encourage or condone such stupidity or those who seek to assist/earn on it.

The legal limit for retail sale in the UK is 75mg/ml. As I understand it, it is not illegal to be in possession of anything stronger.

That said, at least one supplier I know of has been selling pure nicotine in drums of 10 litres. Since it is inconceivable that anyone here in their right mind would make such a purchase, I would strongly urge those who are not, to not.

Onceupon swapped cigarettes for e-cigarettes yonks back
In that time, over a million kids started smoking in the UK alone
