Hi Frank
Been trying to compose a useful answer to that; something that is not glib; will definitely say something on the subject later bit pushed for time right now.

Short glib answer yes and no and both are good.

Near enough to help with quitting smoking, but obviously not the same - no lingering smell for a starter. I guess the throat hit and the tactile part are things that other nic replacement therapies don't give. It's also something of a hobby for me.

In the words of a great man....
More than just a hobby, it’s a passion

It has its differences to smoking...
But
the habitual/ritual part we keep Smiling
the nicotine part we keep Smiling
the coughing & spluttering, for a while we keep (not for long)

the breathless wheezing you ain’t keeping that,
the smell... nope, only when you quit smoking do you
realise how... bad that actually is, sorry, was

Basically... any smokers, even remotely curious of making the switch..
GO FOR IT!!
Ask a vaper you know, ask on here,
ask anyone who vapes...
ask on social media,
*beware, social media is a polarised environment
so again, ask a vaper, not the “outsiders”

(try not to ask in a vape shop, is my only advice)

RE: Make the Switch: Guide to Vaping
Not sure I can add much to what the guys have said above all of which I second esp. what Hugh says about wheezing.

It is four and a half years since I have had (or wanted) a smoke and the memory is getting a remote one but a few thoughts.

I would say that the nic hit from a vape is never going to be that hard instant experience you get with a cigarette and that is no bad thing; I at least have long become accustomed to a milder way of absorbing nicotine and perhaps as consequence no longer get that gnawing need for it to be gratified instantly. I can go for hours without a vape or thinking about it; when I smoked the next cigarette was never far from my thoughts. Indeed I suspect for some this happens even more drastically as they give up vaping as well as smoking or vaping with zero nicotine juices.

The main thing I do find different is not waking up with what felt like an old door mat for a tongue and that hacking cough.

Anyway please give vaping a good go Frank if you are not already, only wish I had taken the trouble to take it seriously as a total alternative long before I finally did.

& Good Luck.

RE: Make the Switch: Guide to Vaping
One more, you mentioned waking up...

Since I started vaping,
I don’t wake up & look for my vape like I used to with the cigarettes,
Not now anyway,
Yes in the first 2yrs it was, more of a reassurance, to have vape by bed,
but now... I’m not arsed to be honest,
Same goes for leaving the house vape free..
that NEVER happened with cigarettes..

And in true “addicts” anonymous style..

(Hands up)

My name (is not Hugh)
But after 24yrs addicted to cigarettes
I’ve been smoke free for 5yrs thanks to vaping!

(Steps off soapbox & sits down)

** ps... smokers,
what in living fuck have you got to lose by “at least” attempting to switch??
Seriously??

(That will never be used as a media slogan/blurb)

Just think.... do it...
it’s easier to quit smoking via vaping
& it’s easier to quit nicotine via vaping

It’s not what you do...
it’s the way that you do it..
But NEVER be told, how to do it..
This is your time on stage... LIVE IT!!!

RE: Make the Switch: Guide to Vaping
It seems, that despite being a medium to heavy smoker for 50 years, that I was one of the ones who wasn't addicted to smoking when I managed to give them up 4 - 5 years ago. Either that, or vaping was much more effective than people realize, because I just swapped and the desire for a ciggy was gone completely in the first couple of weeks after I swapped. It was my first proper attempt to stop and worked because I got my hands on some decent kit (Istick + mini Nautilus). I had bought a cheap cartridge cig-alike, tried it and thought - not for me, whilst continuing to smoke.

So it seems my only addiction, was to the habit of, the paraphernalia of having something to do with hands and I dare not have left home without the ciggies and lighter. On public transport, I couldn't wait to get off and have a ciggy. Now, I always carry my Istick, but never get the same sort of urge, I am in no rush at all and if I were to forget it - I wouldn't be too bothered at all.

I have not noticed any health improvements since giving up, apart from rather odd ones. A large dark brown patch of skin on my forehead which had appeared years ago, suddenly just rubbed away and a thumb nail damaged in a accident 50 years before, which had never grown properly, suddenly grew as it should into a normal appearance.

The nearest thing to actual smoking without actually smoking...
