Depends on your definition of a mech, I guess. Same behaviour - puts out battery voltage, no regulation. Protection will only be current limit from the fuses, which have been used in mechs before.

If a non-regulated mod with protection circuits is called a protected mech, then I guess the proposed device qualifies as a mech. The mosfet is a good idea, as it gets rid of switch problems like arcing and heating.
